Brentwood College Debate
2012: Debate Starts Strongly
Tue January 17
16 debaters set off Saturday morning feeling like they were on their back heel. Having only been back to school for the preceding week, some of our debaters were feeling a little under-prepared and even printing out their constructive arguments while chewing on their breakfast. However, once the first round at Shawnigan Lake school was underway, the excitement was palpable.
Ten other schools, totaling exactly 100 teams of 2 competitors each, were competing at the Bruce-Lockhart debate tournament. After two rounds of debating whether the 21st century will belong to China, there was, after a hearty lunch, an impromptu round. The awards ceremony was late to start and as numbers were being tallied, there was a frisson of excitement in our students who felt they had all performed well.
This anticipation was well-deserved as our debaters achieved 2nd and 3rd in the senior category thanks to Calvin S and Georgia K. Out of a field of 200! Congratulations!
B.I.R.T. we are looking forward to the next three weekends of intense tournament competition!
Mr. Neil Bryant, Coach
