Senior Soccer Notches North Island Title

The Senior Girls Soccer team travelled to neighbouring SLS for the North Island Playoffs this week...

The Senior Girls Soccer team travelled to neighbouring SLS for the North Island Playoffs this week and came away with four wins, the tournament title, and the top seed going to the Island playoffs May 14/15th at SMUS.

The first game against Gulf Islands was a see-saw battle with BCS taking the lead on an Eryn W cross from the left met smartly by Karly D. Salt Spring clawed their way back in from a corner kick that eventually found the back of the BCS net to even the score. Mairi H gave us back the lead, and although Gulf Islands never stopped competing, it was Brentwood that finished on the better side of a 2-1 game.

The second game against Mark Isfeld from the Comox Valley saw BCS with most of the play, but an in-form Isfeld keeper kept a clean sheet until midway through the second half when Mairi H put one away. Soon after that Mairi
slipped a ball through to Tessa M to run onto, and although the keeper made the initial stop, Tessa was able to head in the resulting deflection. BCS 2, MI 0.

Finishing at the top of our pool, BCS took on SLS in the semi-final and a close match saw goals for BCS, the first from Karly D, the second by Mairi H, before SLS got a goal back to put the game back onto a boil. BCS 2 SLS 1.

The gold medal game featured a rematch against the Gulf Islands and although BCS had the bulk of the play the GI keeper made some outstanding saves to keep it notched at zeros before two late (and deserved) goals, coming first from Meaghan B who coolly took it around the keeper on a breakaway, followed by a superb long range strike by Karlein L. BCS 2, GI 0.

Carrying a deep bench of fifteen senior players and three juniors (Karly D, Karlein L, & Kelsey H), we were able to keep good momentum during four games over two days. The backline was very solid allowing the midfield to flow forward and to link up well with our forwards. Although we struggled at times to find the net, the buildup was excellent and we expect more goals will come in future games. Mairead M was exceptional in her corner kick delivery, as well as playing a sublime sweeper role.

Colts Snag Jags

On Saturday, May the 5th, the Brentwood Colts Rugby team travelled to Victoria to play a match against St. Michaels Blue Jags during their alumni weekend. Having lost narrowly to SMUS before Spring Break, and coming off a disappointing defeat to SLS two weeks prior, the Colts had something to prove, and rise to the occasion they did.

The game came to full steam with penalty kicks being scored by both sides. SMUS, being a team of speed and wide runners, found it difficult to contest with Brentwood at the breakdowns and tackle situations. The Colts took full advantage of this with the inclusions of many forward balls, followed by line-breaking runs from the backline.

After a close first half, Brentwood ran away with the game, 33-11. Honorable mentions go to scrumhalf Thomas S, who went 5 of 7 off the kicking tee, and also to Dane B, who debuted his strength and speed picking up 5 points of his own.

All in all it was an excellent team effort in a display of some of the finest rugby the squad has played all year. We will now go up against Lower Island powerhouse Oak Bay High school on Thursday afternoon.

Sean J, Captain of the Forwards

The Windermere Cup

Last Friday at 5am, Brentwood’s Varsity 8 crawled out of bed and staggered down to Crooks’ Hall before collapsing into the seats of a small bus.
After a ferry to the mainland, we arrived in Seattle that afternoon. We managed to fit in a quick row down the course with the SMUS quad in a semi-torrential downpour; the weather caused 7 seat Nick R to adapt by constructing a garbage-bag rain jacket.

That evening, the Milne family treated us to an unforgettable dinner at the Space Needle. Most of us chose the steak option, but all the dishes were fantastic. The general tone afterwards was sorrow…that we were not going to have a meal that good for a very, very long time and we briefly considered amending the race plan with a call based on the possibility that a second steak was waiting for us beyond the finish line.

Held at the University of Washington, the Windermere Cup is one of the most prestigious rowing regattas in North America featuring the best in high school, club, university and national team rowing. With a full marching band, a racecourse framed by huge yachts, and over 200,000 spectators, it was an experience that none of us will ever forget. The ecstatic blur of noise as we raced down the course, as well as the pack of innumerable boats that we rowed amongst on the way back are memories that will last forever.

Being an invitational regatta, it was a great honor for Brentwood to be included. We placed second in the Club Youth Division, being the only Canadian boat as well as the only school entered in the category. We also beat Mount Baker who bested us at our regatta a week prior. Revenge was sweet. Next week we will be racing at Shawnigan, then on to St. Catharines! Thanks the Mr. Carr and the Milnes for such a wonderful weekend of hospitality and excellent racing.

Brett L, Captain of Rowing

First XV Harness Blue Jags

This past Saturday the Brentwood Boy's First XV continued their winning ways defeating a very strong St. Michael's squad 31-8. In front of a packed crowd full of SMUS alumni, the boys displayed some early jitters conceding a try in the opening phase of the game; however a dazzling break from scrum-half Mike G ten minutes later allowed Brentwood to regain the lead, 7-5. Ian M tacked on another score to close the half after the forwards punched their way through the St. Michael's defense giving the boys a 12-8 lead at break.
The second half was a different story as the boys took control of the match thanks to hulking center Mike M bursting through the fatiguing defense with a beautiful try under the posts. Despite playing into the wind, fullback Daniel E kept the opposition pinned inside their own half with some precise kicking. The forwards dominated for the entirety of the game as Scott P manhandled his opposite number at every scrum.
Prop Davin K continued his scoring ways by notching another two tries after beautifully supporting the backs and then also capping off a perfect maul that was driven twenty meters to reach the SMUS try line. Fly half Adam M tagged on three conversions.
As the final whistle brought the game to a close, the boys were ecstatic with their performance. Our next game will be against Ladysmith on Thursday, May 10th for provincial seeding, then we face rivals Shawnigan Lake on Tuesday, May 15th at home.
