Lifesaving and Swimming

Second term aquatic programmes are delivered through the Cowichan Aquatic Centre in Duncan. They lead to the Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and National Lifeguard Certification. Swimming lessons are offered for non-swimmers in terms one and two.

  • The Bronze Medallion award teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness.
  • The Bronze Cross award is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities.
  • The National Lifeguard Service (NLS) award builds on the skills, knowledge and values that the Lifesaving Society teaches in its Pre-Bronze and Bronze Medal awards to develop the practical skills and knowledge required by lifeguards.
