Photography in the Brentwood Studio

Beginners Photography

This course will provide the basic knowledge needed to take, and make, black and white photographs. Programme includes: the history of photography, the mechanics of the 35mm camera and accessories, understanding and selecting exposure, basics of composition and design, processing film and beginners’ darkroom printing.

Traditional Photography

This course explores many advanced techniques including: a deeper exploration of the camera's creative tools, the use of specialized films and camera accessories, and advanced darkroom skills. Challenging assignments will provide an introduction to such diverse techniques as multiple exposures, negative sandwiches, contrast control with filters, and motion in a still image.

Digital Photography

This course introduces the student to digital photography and digital photo-editing. The program also explores many advanced techniques including: a deeper exploration of the camera's creative tools and the use of specialized camera accessories. Challenging assignments will provide an introduction to the potential of digital photography in a student’s future occupational and educational activities.

Fine Art Photography

This course is intended for those digital and traditional photography students doing a third year of photography and who have a strong interest in creating photographic art. The course includes the continuing exploration of the camera's creative tools, advanced darkroom (electronic and traditional) skills, hand making prints, toning and hand colouring, optional introduction to medium format photography using school cameras, and effective presentation and display of your completed photographs. To end the school year, students will stage and host an art photography exhibit of their work in the Cowichan Valley Art Council’s gallery in downtown Duncan, and will the program with a university-ready portfolio of their year’s work.

Beginners Digital Video

This course will introduce students to the basics of video production. Subjects include: camera, lighting, and sound equipment operations; basic digital editing; screen writing; and storyboarding. Students will also learn basic teamwork skills to develop group projects. Projects include a commercial, a short documentary, and a short drama.

Advanced Digital Video

This course will explore the advanced techniques of video production. Subjects include: advanced camera, lighting, and sound equipment operations; and development of advanced digital editing skills. Students will create both team and individual projects.

Creative Digital Video

The Creative Video Production Programme will encourage the development of longer personal expression projects that reflect the advanced skill level of the third year video production student. These projects will emphasis team work and collaborative work using lower grades DV students in support positions.

Modern Video

Students in Modern Video will learn classic filming techniques and apply them to modern video trends. The class will explore a wide range of video styles and apply these concepts to videos of their own design for which the student has full creative freedom. Students are also able to focus on projects of their own choice such as working with the Rock Band class to create music videos, creating open house promotional videos or creating a grad video. Students will learn how to make their creative visions a reality in a smooth and efficient work flow.

Photojournalism

Students in this course assist in the production of the 'The Brentwood Blog' section of the school web page. They are responsible for creating reports/stories and shooting appropriate accompanying photographs each week of publication. Students must have proven creative writing skills and a good photographer's eye.

Looking at yearbooks

Yearbook

This course is offered to students in the senior school who are interested in capturing and chronicling the year in pictures and in print. The main focus of the yearbook team is to photograph academics, sports, fine arts and social activities. The team is also responsible for editing reports from teachers, coaches and instructors. Students meet with their instructor three times a week, but much of their work is performed outside these meeting times. Students interested in this course must be able to work independently and be willing to cover assignments outside of regular class time; access to a digital camera of six mega pixels or better is required.
