Senior Acting Production - I Remember Mama A 1944 play by John Van Druten. Based on the fictionalized memoir 'Mama's Bank Account' by Kathryn Forbes, it focuses on a loving family of Norwegian immigrants in San Francisco in 1911 struggling to make financial 'ends meet'. The Hansen family's story is told by the eldest daughter, 38 year old Katrin, as she completes the last lines of her autobiographical novel. The play is a flashback to her teens when she was trying to discover her voice as a writer and live peacefully with her large extended family of three siblings, two interfering aunts, one needy aunt, an intimidating uncle, an eccentric boarder, a quiet but supportive father and a strong mother. A movie version (1948), a TV sitcom (1949-1957) and a Broadway musical (1979) have been adapted from Van Druten's beloved script. Book now. |
