Brentwood is very proud of its academic accomplishments and the quality of its 21st century curriculum. A challenging university preparatory programme necessitates that a great deal of academic support is offered at every level to our students. With easy access to teachers, tutors, counselors and advisors, and a strong network of programmes designed to help students throughout their time at Brentwood, students are able to easily find guidance, encouragement and assistance.
Advanced Placement
Brentwood’s versatile timetable allows qualified students at any grade level to take advantage of the many Advanced Placement options offered at our school. AP Examinations are offered annually in May throughout North America to give high school students opportunities to demonstrate college-level achievement. Over 1000 post-secondary institutions in the USA and Canada regularly grant advanced placement into a second year course or credit for the first year course, to students presenting AP examination grades of 4 or higher.

Learning outside the classroom
Brentwood is located directly beside the ocean and this gives Brentwood students an exciting opportunity. Just outside our doors students can observe wildlife and habitats, collect samples, and investigate biospheres and biomes, or simply to surround themselves with nature. This accessibility to the ocean, as well as annual trips to wilderness learning centers like Strathcona Park Lodge or Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre, not only allows integration of marine biology and oceanography into our science programmes in a real and meaningful way, it allows our students to learn outside of the classrooms themselves.
Technology
At Brentwood we integrate technology into the school's infrastructure, teaching methodologies, and learning environments. Students are encouraged to become knowledgeable, discerning, and ethical members of the information community. As a university preparatory school, technical training is paramount for our graduates' future academic success. Our campus is completely wireless and all students must have a laptop (PC or Mac). The Brentwood wireless network is accessed by over 500 computers across campus. Every member of our community is provided with an email account, network space, and access to software programs. With interactive white boards (SMARTBoards), projectors, and the option to use laptops in the classroom, we are committed to facilitating learning through technology.
Advisors
All students have an Advisor. The Advisor’s role is to oversee the entire programme (academics, arts, athletics and residential life) of their ‘advisee’. The Advisor is an advocate for the students and each week all students meet with their advisor during the academic morning. The Advisor is assigned to the same house as their ‘advisees’ so that access to each other can be as frequent as needed. All parents and guardians can expect communication from the Advisor. In the senior grades the advisors also work with the university counselors on course selection.
Effort and Achievement
Students are expected to reach achievement levels that reflect their best in terms of ability, attitude, and effort. These ‘effort ratings’ are based on a teacher’s perception of the overall effort of the student in a class. Superior effort is rewarded through Academic Commendation every half-term. In addition to individual subject prizes awarded at the end of the year, superior achievement, together with a sound academic attitude, is recognized by the awarding of Academic Colours in each grade.
