Heads Welcome

Brentwood is a boarding school by design. Far from traditional ivy covered cloisters, our Grade 9-12 campus is contemporary with a college feel, and our educational philosophy grounded in current research. As educators, our concern is for character and community, as well as curriculum.

Our tripartite programme is uniquely scheduled to facilitate full student participation in academics, athletics and the arts. Opportunities also abound for social time with friends, special events, and leadership through service. Thus, Brentonians discover their strengths, and develop the skills and attitudes to make informed, independent, ethical decisions.

Every student has the chance to shine, each in his or her own way. We celebrate the confidence with which our graduates pursue their varied global paths. Brentonians are prepared to make a living, ready to make a life, and motivated to make a difference.

Brentwood is a vibrant, dynamic school. We work hard, we care for one another, and we have fun. Please visit our beautiful oceanfront campus and see for yourself. We look forward to making you welcome.

History

Brentwood College was founded in 1923 at Brentwood Bay, BC, by a visionary Board of Governors chaired by Cuthbert Holmes and its first Headmaster, J.P. Hope. From the initial enrolment of fifty boys and a faculty of four, the school gained an enviable reputation through outstanding academic and athletic results. Brentonians remember with pride the achievements of our founders, including Brentwood's first Olympian, Ned Pratt (Class of 1930) and Federal Cabinet Minister, Alastair Gillespie (Class of 1941).

History

In 1947, fire consumed the Brentwood Bay campus; only the Brentwood Memorial Chapel survived, and the College closed within a year. Yet, Old Brentonians remained loyal to the spirit of their alma mater and dreamed of rebuilding their school. In September 1961, a refounding Board of dedicated alumni, inspired by the enthusiasm of Headmaster David Mackenzie, reestablished Brentwood College on the shores of Mill Bay, directly across the water from its original location. In 1972, Brentwood College was the first boys' boarding school in Canada to become co-educational, a journey completed in 2010, with the enrollment of equal numbers of boys and girls.

In 1976, Bill Ross was appointed as Headmaster, remaining at the helm until July 2000, when he was succeeded by Andrea Pennells. From early pioneering days, the School has flourished through the rebuilding of the campus, the development of Brentwood’s unique tri-partite programme of academics, athletics and arts, and the continuing tradition of leadership through service to others, to become one of the world’s great 21st century boarding schools, recognized as a distinct, distinctive place of learning.
